Colburn S. Wilbur

Colburn S. Wilbur, Trustee and former President of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Los Altos, CA, has been appointed chair of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Global Ethics, Camden, ME.
Wilbur served for 23 years as CEO of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, which is a private family foundation created in 1964 by David Packard, cofounder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and Lucile Salter Packard. The Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the following program areas: Conservation and Science; Population; and Children, Families, and Communities. The Foundation had a grantmaking budget of approximately $200 million in 2005.
Wilbur also served as Executive Director and CEO of the Sierra Club Foundation. He was a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foundations (1999-2000), and in 1999 received the Distinguished Grantmaker Award from the Council on Foundations. Wilbur co-authored two books published by the Council on Foundations - Grantmaking Basics and Grantmaking Basics II.
Wilbur has served on the board of the Institute for Global Ethics since 2002. “The Institute will continue to work to establish a world where core moral values shape relationships, strengthen decision-making, and guide the actions of corporations, educational institutions, foundations, and other organizations,” said Wilbur. “The board and staff are making great progress.”
Rushworth M. Kidder, president and chair of the Institute for 16 years, assumes the new role of president & founder remains on the board. Kidder believes “Cole’s quiet strength, his integrity and his commitment to ethical decision-making and leadership will help imprint the work of the Institute on the 21 st century.” Graham Phaup, executive director of the Institute since 2002, also joins the board.
The mission of the Institute for Global Ethics is to promote ethical behavior in individuals, institutions, and nations through research, public discourse, and practical action. A nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nonsectarian organization headquartered in Camden, Maine, with affiliates in New York, London, and Vancouver, the Institute works with individuals and organizations of every kind, providing publications, speakers, training, and other assistance in making ethics an integral part of daily life.
