In Memory of Mary Margaret Young – with Thanks
A member of the board of directors for IGE’s US and Canadian operations, Mary Margaret Young died peacefully in the early morning of December 7, 2005, at her home in Vancovuer, British Columbia.
Born in Berkeley, California, she was married to her late husband, William Mourice Young, for 54 years. Together, they helped establish the Centre for Applied Ethics at the University of British Columbia in an effort to reinforce an ethical foundation they felt wasn’t being addressed in business schools.
Mary Margaret and Maury were instrumental in establishing IGE Canada and in helping it gain financial stability in its early years. After Maury’s death in 1999, Mary Margaret joined the board of directors for both the US and Canadian entities.
Unfailingly gracious and thoughtful, Mary Margaret brought enormous wisdom and penetrating insight to board discussions, having a keen eye for character and a well-honed sense of business, philanthropy, and the workings of the nonprofit sector. For all who knew her, she was a remarkable example of the way in which the contributions of a single individual can d so much to establish the traditions and cultures of an organization. As individuals privileged to have known her, we are what we are today in part because her genius for affection and engagement remain deeply rooted in our organization.
We are deeply appreciative that Mary Margaret’s legacy and generosity will long help us to grow stronger and to create a more ethical world for others.
