Education Week commentary promotes Institute’s “Schools of Integrity” research

“We know what schools of integrity look like. We know how to build them. It's time for school leaders to get out in front of the crowd and make it look like a parade.” That’s the conclusion of coauthors Patrick Bassett, Paul Houston, and Rushworth Kidder in “Building Character in Crisis,” published in the July 15, 2009 edition of Education Week.

Ethical Literacy® Approach—Implementation

Teams wrap up the second day of Ethical Literacy training by establishing tentative dates for follow-on services, including—coaching sessions and benchmarking. Implementation takes a structured, coordinated approach over time. Ethical Literacy Coaches:
  • Guide the team forward through regular, scheduled coaching sessions that tackle questions or concerns and provide specific technical assistance
  • Reinforce team learning through web based training opportunities
  • Provide new activities to equip the team to deliver to a variety of school community constituents including administration, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Lead the team in periodic benchmarking to measure and celebrate progress, and to determine next steps
  • Connect the team to other participating teams both virtually and at our annual Ethical Literacy® conference

While we don’t promise that a school will make a complete culture shift in three years, our goal is to have established a sustainable trend line in the right direction. We strive to establish a forward momentum of continuous education about and appreciation for ethics across the school community, leading to our stated objectives. Any school has the option to continue working with us for as long as needed to establish or strengthen this institutional focus.

Deliverables

We provide the following deliverables to schools during the implementation phase of Ethical Literacy:

  • Coaching Sessions: Three sessions per school year or one full-day  face-to-face session, scheduled in advance of the year
  • Benchmarking: Once per school year, teams in collaboration with the Institute administer the School Culture Assessment with the whole school population. Ethical Literacy coaches provide a report that analyzes the data and makes recommendations to build and/or adjust action plans accordingly
  • Activities: The Institute commits to developing one activity per participating school year, while providing access to activities created for other participating schools
  • Community Learning & Networking: The institute provides access to shared resources, activities, and results from participating schools as well as opportunities to network virtually and at our annual Ethical Literacy conference
