Hours before UN secretary general Kofi Annan was to visit, Sudanese authorities emptied the camp of thousands of refugees victimized by government forces and the Janjaweed, renegade militias accused of engaging in ethnic cleansing. The months-old genocide has reached a crisis stage, with Western nations finally interceding and demanding that the government rein in the abusive forces.
