News about business ethics was featured in the world press last week. Among the coverage:
- More than two-thirds of companies questioned in a recent survey are in favor of linking salaries and bonuses to ethical behavior, reports British human resources journal Personnel Today. The 2008 European Integrity Survey, which questioned 100 senior executives at the largest publicly listed firms in Europe, found that while 68 percent were in favor of the ethics-compensation connection, only 21 percent currently implement such a practice.
- As corporate scandals continue to rock many large firms in Germany, the nation’s chancellor is imploring industry heads to be vigilant about enforcing ethics, reports Berlin-based news service Deutsche Welle. Chancellor Angela Merkel told business leaders to “take care that our community’s rules of play are adhered to at the highest level…. Every irresponsible colleague in your circles endangers the basis of our liberal society.”
- Former Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee last week pleaded not guilty to charges of tax evasion and breach of trust. Lee used the opening of his trial to apologize for “causing concerns” about Korea’s largest conglomerate, reports the Seoul-based Yonhap news service. Along with nine other Samsung executives, Lee was indicted on charges of evading about $100 million in taxes as well as orchestrating an improper transfer of power to his son.
