Launching Ethical Literacy®
Developing cultures of integrity: Positive change processes take hard work, perseverance and support. The Ethical Literacy model encourages schools’ serious investment in ethics by providing consistent feedback of progress made and support in deciding next steps.
Ethical Literacy builds on IGE’s proven conceptual framework for developing ethical decision making skills. This framework develops awareness about why ethics matters and alerts individuals to the many ways that ethics and values play a role in current events, in work and in personal health and choice making.
The Ethical Literacy™ Approach: The EL curriculum is never static. Along with the knowledge each school gains from other participating EL schools, IGE’s research partnerships with national and international education associations fuel our activity with EL schools.

How do Ethical Literacy Schools benefit? Our research in collaboration with the National Association of State Boards describes skills and best practices to help school boards and superintendents promote healthy high school interscholastic sports programming. Results from these activities will be available to participating EL schools. We're also collaborating with the National Association of Independent Schools to research how exemplary schools maintain their focus on ethics while keeping academic standards high. Our current project with the Ashoka organization will connect EL participants with new ideas and teaching practices from Latin American. Ideas and learning from all our research projects become activities and feedback for EL schools.
Ethical Literacy™ schools receive initial training, intensive coaching from selected, highly qualified IGE staff, data-driven feedback throughout the school year, and access to new activities and insights resulting from other schools’ participation in Ethical Literacy. In the ensuing two years, schools continue to receive coaching and data-driven feedback, and access to all new activities that the Ethical Literacy community generates. In years 4 and 5 and beyond, pilot schools can continue to learn and progress through new activities and ongoing participation at our annual conference.
Who should participate? The Ethical Literacy (EL) model involves training 8 - 10 educators from a school community. This EL Training Team should be comprised of educators who demonstrate leadership ability, who are deeply committed to their school’s mission and who appreciate the mission of IGE. While EL Trainers need not be classroom teachers (and a mix of classroom and non-classroom roles may be advantageous) each candidate should demonstrate potential at effective facilitation of discussions and other highly interactive group work, and should be comfortable with the often ambiguous nature –raising more questions than providing answers- of our ethics work. A degree of organization skill or support is required for effective results in Ethical Literacy. Consistent follow through is a must for effective results in our work.Learn More>>
